Copy of a Marble of Venus, Goddess of Love

Copy of a Marble of Venus, Goddess of Love

Provenance: A Neo-Classical bust, attributed to John Gibson (1790–1866), and commissioned in c. 1850.

A superb quality bust, one of several Gibson experimented with; the final version causing sensation when it was exhibited in London in 1862. A beautiful nude woman poses with her head slightly turned; this is no real woman, but Venus, goddess of love and beauty. The smooth white form and perfect proportions embodied the current ideal of feminine beauty, derived from the statuary of the ancient world.
